Notes: Logic of English is a very solid phonics foundation that is multi-sensory in nature. It is parent intensive and covers phonics thoroughly.  Foundations is better suited to a student starting K or 1, rather than moving over from another phonics program.

McRuffy Phonics and Reading (Video Overview)

pic McRuffy 2This is a scripted, all in one language arts program for K-4. Handwriting is included at the option of the teacher/parent in cursive or manuscript. At the K-2 levels, it is focused around a weekly phonics lesson, with skills introduced by the parent, and practice through daily color worksheets and readers. Worksheets and readers are the core of this program. This program is more parent intensive at the K-2 level and lessens at 3rd and 4th when readers also change to chapters within a bound volume.

Note: Includes practice through optional online “playground” on the McRuffy website.

Moving Beyond The Page+ Quality Phonics

Get your hands dirty investigating the world around us. Depending on the level you choose, your child will develop an appreciation for world cultures by reading  stories from around the world or enjoy dress up activities and practice math skills through literature.   This curriculum uses an investigative, hands-on approach and is cross curricular.  It is divided by age rather than grade level and you can choose the appropriate level for your child.  This is a truly comprehensive curriculum will expose them to science and social studies as well.  These subjects can be the most engaging and exciting for a young child. Notes: Moving Beyond The Page is a literature and project based curriculum. There are more activities than one family needs and it can become overwhelming if one chooses to do them all. Our favorite way to use it is to pick and choose between activities or to combine two closely aged siblings in one level, choosing harder acitivities for one student and easier activities for another.   Requires a separate phonics in K-2. link

Each day and week is clearly laid out in each book. While the pages are simple without lots of color and pictures, they are well laid out and easy to use. Once a student can read independently they can work relatively independently within this program.

Shurley English

Shurley English covers grammar and composition. Students memorize jingles to learn grammar. Children memorize jingles to learn some pic shurley 2grammar basics. Students learn through the question and answer process. The program also teaches writing in a structured way. link

Reading Horizons  (online)

Reading Horizons is an online reading program that is based on Orton-Gillingham research. This program is explicit, sequential, systematic, and multi-sensory. This program helps student to learn the why behind decoding. It uses marking to help students learn to decode and has a fun interactive platform with fun reading incentives. This makes it an excellent online option for new readers and very helpful for struggling readers.

Spelling You See (Video Overview)

Jack and JillThis is a developmentally based spelling program.   It is designed to work with the student as they move through developmental stages of spelling.  This level focuses on lowercase letter formation, consonants, and short vowels. Moves the student from three-letter words to four-letter and eventually to five-letter words.  Contains 36 lessons divided into five parts (A through E) for ten minute or less daily lessons.  This program teaches correct pencil grip and letter formation. and emphasizes the consistent, automatic formation of lowercase letters.   link

Notes: Continual Review is a notable part of the program.  Does not necessarily correlate to grade level.    It does not include the traditional method of handwriting and parents may need to adjust according to the method they prefer.

Soaring with Spelling

This program is based on The Writer's Jungle, written by Julie Bogart. The Writer's Jungle is an explanation of Bogart's writing method. One can use The Writer's Jungle to guide writing as a parent designed curriculum. Alternately, the author created a series of writing curriculums and language arts guides (with grammar and literature study) that follow the philosophy of The Writer's Jungle. This curriculum has a feeling of Charlotte Mason. Link

Notes: This curriculum covers language arts and writing depending on the component you choose, but requires another curriculum to cover foundational skills. It does not focus on expository writing.  Additional components to accompany the writing

Beta builds on the foundation in Alpha by applying students’ mastery of single-digit addition and subtraction to multiple-digit addition and subtraction. One of the stepping stones between these two levels is the concept of place value, which is an important milestone for truly grasping any multiple-digit operation. link
